Frew feels team has more goal potential
Barkingside powered their way through pre-season with six wins from seven games and an impressive 39 goals.
And manager Matt Frew believes this potency could be the difference in Ryman One North this time around.
The Sky Blues finished last season in 20th place after flirting with relegation for much of the campaign, but optimism has grown after recent results.
A trip to Thamesmead Town will be Barkingside’s first test on Saturday before they host Maldon on Monday.
Frew said: “Ryman North is very cruel – I found that last year. You might only get one or two chances and you’ve got to take them.
“You can create five chances and not score, then the opposition might have one chance and put it in the back of the net.
“This year I feel we’ve got goals throughout the team. There are a lot of options there as well, we’re young, very quick, there’s a lot of experience, so it’s a good mix.
“It’s going to be a tough game on Saturday and we’ve just got to give it our all. If we do that then I can’t ask anymore from the players.”
Barkingside ended pre-season with a 4-1 win over Ryman Premier side Grays on Monday, having thumped Debden (12-0), Halstead Town (8-0) and been 6-0 up when their match at Takeley was abandoned.
Frew is keen to focus on his side’s league campaign, though, instead of dwelling on success achieved in friendlies.
“If we slip up on Saturday then it’s all out the window and forgotten about,” he added. “We need to kick on now and I still think we can play a bit better.
“The boys have worked hard in pre-season and the rewards are showing. Hopefully we can get a good start to the season.”
Even success has its down sides though, as pleasing performances have created competition for places, which inevitably means some will have have to sit out the season opener.
Frew said: “The squad’s very strong and it’s just competition for places now. I said to the boys that we can laugh and joke now, but some of the boys are going to be disappointed on Saturday and there will be some players that won’t even make the 16.”
