Daggers picked up a memorable victory as Luke Wilkinson’s sixth of the season saw them snatch all three points off Rotherham at the New York Stadium and complete a fantastic double over Steve Evans’side.
Interim boss Wayne Burnett made three changes which saw Josh Scott, Kevin Maher and Medy Elito restored to the starting line-up in a 4-1-4-1 formation.
Daggers spent much of the opening half on the back foot and their goal lived a charmed life.
Michael O’Connor’s third-minute free-kick struck the stanchion behind the goal and the Daggers only real chance of the half came with 14 minutes on the clock as Matt Saunders’ corner was met by Elito.
He pulled it back for Abu Ogogo but he fired the shot well over the bar.
For all their dominance the set piece was providing the main danger to the Daggers goal and O’Connor bent another one around the post.
As the half wore on the hosts began to create the chances and Lewington did well to gather a Lee Frecklington shot, while in stoppage time Lewington superbly denied Frecklington again after Gavin Hoyte lost possession.
In the early stages of the second half Daggers came into their own and dominated the opening minutes.
And with 58 minutes on the clock the visitors won a penalty when Elito found himself bearing down on goal only for Kari Arnason to bundle him over.
Referee Andy Davies pointed to the spot, sent Arnason off and Elito buried the penalty past Andy Warrington.
But the lead lasted just eight minutes when Davis rose highest to head past the onrushing Lewington from David Noble’s corner.
Rotherham were on top despite their numerical disadvantage and Lewington had to be on form to keep out Revell’s fierce effort from the edge of the area.
And the Daggers broke home hearts eight minutes from time when a free-kick from just outside the area on the right was pulled across by Saunders to an onrushing Wilkinson who fired home his sixth of the season.
With time ticking down Rotherham had one final chance to equalise as Ben Pringle’s free-kick hit the crossbar, while Daggers played out the five minutes of stoppage time.
Howell should have settled matters when through on goal but his chip shot hit the side netting.
With that result Daggers moved up to 15th in the table but most importantly, eight points off the drop.
