Rewind 12 months and Daggers were just starting their end of season slump which would result in final day drama, and skipper Abu Ogogo admits it’s nice to be looking up, rather than down the table this time around.
The Victoria Road side may still be a few points away from being mathematically sure of their spot in the Football League for another campaign, but the 24-year-old never had any doubts that the squad would be embroiled in another end of season tussle at the bottom of the table.
“Last season wasn’t a very good season for us and it is nice to still be in with a chance of the play-offs,” said Ogogo.
“If I am being honest I haven’t really felt the need for us to look down at all. Even when we had the blip earlier on in the season I was always looking more at the gap between ourselves and the play-offs.
“We now have seven games left and hopefully we can keep picking up the points.
“At this stage of the season it’s not about performing well all the time, you have to pick up the points and hopefully we can do so.”
As well as having the captain’s armband, the former Arsenal youngster has made the move into midfield this season.
He’s taken to that like a duck to water, while also adding goals with eight to his name. The former Barnet loanee has also only missed one game, the 1-1 draw at Wimbledon, due to five bookings.
He is only two off serving a two-match ban for accruing 10 cautions over the course of the season, and though he’s beginning to feel it a little in the legs, adrenaline and the play-off hopes will keep him going until the bitter end.
“It’s my first full season and I feel like I have done quite well in midfield in most of the games,” he added.
“I have added goals to my game as well although they have dried up a bit of late. I’ve only missed one game this season and I am beginning to feel it at little but I am going to give it my all for the remaining games and see where it takes us.
“I didn’t realise I was on eight booking until the gaffer told me the other day. I’ve picked up a few silly ones of late so I have to try and keep them out of my game. The last three games I have been more careful but while I try not to think about it too much it is still at the back of your mind.
