Johnstone’s Paint Trophy first round: Dagenham & Redbridge 4 Colchester United 1
Four second half goals saw Daggers get the better of 10-men Colchester United and ensure progress to the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Victoria Road
Brian Wilson had given the U’s a first half lead but a resurgent second half showing from the hosts saw Medy Elito level.
Former Dagger Magnus Okuonghae was then shown his marching orders and Wayne Burnett’s side went on to take advantage with goals from Brian Saah, Abu Ogogo and Louis Dennis.
Burnett made five changes from the 3-0 loss at Mansfield Town on Saturday but the game was slow to get going with neither side testing goalkeepers Jordan Seabright and Sam Walker.
Jack Connors looked bright at left back and it was his ball in behind the Colchester defence which should have been finished by Obafemi, but he failed to get a touch on the good delivery with 36 minutes on the clock.
But it was the visitors who took the lead when skipper Brian Wilson curled a fine free-kick past Seabright from just outside the area.
That was how it remained at the break, but Burnett’s side showed some encouraging signs in the second half.
Elito fired wide on 53 minutes but he went one better four minutes later when he rose highest at the back post to head home a great delivery in from Gavin Hoyte.
And the tie turned in the hosts favour when former Dagger Magnus Okuonghae was shown his marching orders by referee Charles Breakspear for pulling back Zavon Hines and receiving his second yellow card with 62 minutes on the clock.
Just two minutes had passed when the Daggers took the lead when Hines’ low ball in was tapped in by Brian Saah for his first goal for the club.
And with 11 minutes remaining the win was sealed when Hines was provider once again and his ball in was tapped in at the near post by captain Abu Ogogo.
There was still time for a fourth to increase Colchester’s woes when Hines’ through ball to substitute Louis Dennis saw him one-on-one with Walker and he slotted the ball underneath the onrushing goalkeeper.
