Dagenham & Redbridge forward Sam Williams may not have been the most prolific striker in the past, but he is happy with his season return so far.

Throughout his career striker Sam Williams has struggled to score goals, but the Daggers forward is now pleased to be finding the net regularly after claiming his sixth of the season in the 1-0 win over Fleetwood Town on Saturday.

Before joining John Still’s side the 25-year-old had scored just 12 times in 101 appearances, but the former Aston Villa trainee has now come into the most prolific form in his career.

And after always being classed as the team man, he is now delighted to finally reap some rewards for his hard graft on the pitch.

“Throughout my career I have done a lot of team work and set up a lot of goals, but at the end of the season my goal tally hasn’t been as much as I wanted it to be,” said Williams

“But this season it is going really well, I am adding goals to my game and the team is going great as well, so I have to be happy.”

Williams took over penalty duties on Saturday after predecessors Michael Spillane and Dwight Gayle started to misfire from the spot.

He did so successfully, with the penalty seeing Daggers pick up their third win out of the last four games.

“I wanted them (penalties) at the start of the season,” he added.

“Mickey and Dwight started like a house on fire and they were scoring all over the shop so they took the first few. They said when they miss I’ll be next in line, so I was just happy to step up.”

While Saturday’s win won’t be remembered as a classic, all Williams cares about is the further three points it has given the Daggers in the table.

“You can’t have a 5-0 against Rotherham every week,” he stated. “Both games gave us three points and it’ll just go down as another win.”
