Dagenham & Redbridge manager Wayne Burnett believes his side should relish the occasion as they pit their wits against League Two table toppers Scunthorpe United.

Daggers drew 1-1 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, with Luke Howell netting a stoppage time equaliser against a side then managed by Brian Laws.

But the Iron’s fortunes have improved under Russ Wilcox and they haven’t tasted defeat in their last 10 games to move to the top of the league.

And while the Daggers form hasn’t been anywhere near the standards they set themselves earlier in the campaign, Burnett hopes his team rise to the occasion.

“They have improved a lot since we last played them earlier in the season,” said Burnett.

“They are playing well and certainly have the momentum, which is a big thing in football.”

The Iron have been able to recruit well in the January transfer window, with the likes of Paddy Madden, who was the star turn in Yeovil Town’s promotion from League One last season.

Paul Hayes also returned for another spell with the Glanford Park side and Gary McSheffrey was recruited from Coventry City.

All that makes the Daggers task all the more difficult, but Burnett hopes his side can raise their game.

“They have been able to add to their squad and all of them who have joined are good, quality players.

“The likes of Paddy Madden will be dangerous if you judge him on his League One form last season.

“We know we’ll be in for a tough game but it’s games like this that we should savour and hopefully we can rise to the occasion of playing against the top side in the league.”
