New Daggers signing George Porter admits he has got a point to prove at Victoria Road.

The 22-year-old enjoyed much success early in his career as he made his way at League One neighbours Leyton Orient, but after a £90,000 move to Burnley in 2012 his career has stuttered.

He failed to feature for the Turf Moor side after signing a three-year contract with the Clarets, spending time on loan at Colchester United and AFC Wimbledon, where he featured against the Daggers in the 1-0 New Year’s Day home win last season.

A short-term deal at Rochdale didn’t go to plan, with the winger featuring on just two occasions for Keith Hill’s side.

And Porter now hopes a return to his London roots, albeit on another short-term deal, will be just what we needs to get his career back on track

“I definitely feel I have a point to prove,” said Porter. “Things didn’t happen at Burnley the way I expected after leaving Leyton Orient, but this is a good step and a good club to prove myself at and hopefully I can start playing well again.

“The gaffer plays a lot of young lads here and puts a lot of trust in them, you could see that when I played against them last season.

“The squad is settled already but they’ve made a few signings and look together.

“But it’s nice to be back around here having been away for the last three or four years. I have been up in Burnley and Rochdale so it’s nice to be back down the road.”

Porter came into pre-season slightly behind the rest of the Daggers squad, but he feels up to pace now and hopes he is included in Saturday’s League Two opener against Morecambe.

“I have felt okay in pre-season,” he added. “I came into it a bit late, I was about two weeks behind but with every game I have played I feel a bit fitter and come Saturday I will be ready.

“As soon as you get back into training you can’t wait for the season to start and I am looking forward to Saturday now.”

Porter had some familiar faces around him in the shape of Jamie Cureton from his time at the O’s, while he spent time with Mark Cousins in the loan spell at Colchester.

And that’s a definite bonus for the winger as he looks to settle down at Victoria Road.

“I knew Jamie because he came to Orient when I was there and I knew Billy Bingham and Mark Cousins before,” said Porter.

“I knew a few so it was easy for me to come into the group and get to know the boys. Two weeks ago I didn’t really have a club and I came down to training, played a few pre-season friendlies, got to know the boys and it’s worked out really well.”
