Team news – Wycombe Wanderers v Dagenham & Redbridge
Daggers boss Wayne Burnett goes into today’s game against Wycombe Wanderers lacking numbers out wide.
Ashley Chambers was called back by parent club Cambridge United early, while they will also be without loanee Blair Turgott, who confirmed he’d be out with an ankle injury picked up in training on social networking site Twitter.
Turgott said: “Gutted I can’t play the game tomorrow. Ankle injury, hopefully back soon.”
That leaves the Daggers chief with just Sean Shields and Medy Elito as out and out wingers going into the game against the Chairboys.
Also ruled out is Zavon Hines (knee) and left back Femi Ilesanmi, who is another to pick up an ankle injury..
Luke Wilkinson played an hour in a development team game on Tuesday with Leyton Orient as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury, and the Daggers squad have been cursed with ankle problems for the bulk of the season with Matt Saunders, Afolabi Obafemi and Luke Howell also struggling in that region of the body over the course of the season.
In recent days the squad have trained at on the pitch at Victoria Road, with difficulty in getting water on to their May & Baker training ground.
That is completely different from a few months ago, when it spent much of the time waterlogged with the bad spell of weather.
And that frustrates Burnett, though he knows little can be done about it.
“At the moment we are struggling to get water on the training ground and it’s really hard over their and unfortunately we can’t do a lot about it,” said Burnett.
“We’ve trained a few days on the pitch because of that and the training ground has gone from one extreme to the other but it’s League Two and we have to get on with it.”
Top goalscorer Rhys Murphy could return to the fold against Gareth Ainsworth’s side after missing March with a groin injury.
Burnett revealed the former Arsenal youngster wanted to start last week, but with another week of training behind him, he may be available for selection.
“He wanted to be involved against Oxford,” he said. “That’s the kind of character he is but I said to him ‘you aren’t fit enough. You weren’t fit enough when you were playing so what chance have you got of playing today?’ He wants to be involved. You can’t stop him.
“That’s kind of player and person he is. He has got that enthusiasm about him and I never want him to lose that because that is a fantastic trait to have.
“I want him to play because he is our top goalscorer. If I could get him and Zavon Hines out there playing I would but this group has done brilliant. We’ve had two of our so-called biggest contributions in Zavon and Rhys out, who haven’t taken part in the last 7-8 games and we are unbeaten.
“So credit has to go to the rest of the team. Will Rhys Murphy be available for Saturday? I hope so. I don’t know whether he will be but I hope so. If he’s got the opportunity to play, trust me, he’ll be playing.”
For Wycombe, striker Matt McClure could be included in the squad after returning to training this week, while centre-back Leon Johnson and Anthony Stewart are both doubtful with hamstring injuries.
