On a miserable rainy day Sam Williams’ penalty deep into stoppage time gave Daggers an unlikely victory against Fleetwood Town, with neither side able to produce any fireworks on the pitch.

There wasn’t much to write home about in the opening stages of the first half with a Jake Reed effort wide of the mark for the hosts, while David Ball’s shot across goal was also off target for the Cod Army.

As the opening period wore on the game opened up ever so slightly.

Luke Wilkinson headed wide a pinpoint cross from skipper Abu Ogogo and the home side went on miss the opportunity of the half.

Youl Mawene failed to deal with a ball over the top and Reed was able to pace away from Fleetwood skipper Steve McNulty but hit his fierce effort against the post before placing the rebound on the roof of the net.

Michael Spillane forced visiting keeper Scott Davies into a regulation save before Reed also wasted another opportunity when bearing down on goal, but took one touch too many and lost possession as the half drew to a close.

The second half started as the first finished with neither side unable to unlock the others defence.

Junior Brown looked the liveliest in attack for Micky Mellon’s side and he twice saw deflected efforts either saved from goalkeeper Chris Lewington or fall wide of the target.

Daggers boss John Still tried to freshen things up with the arrival of Brian Woodall in place of Jake Reed.

Both teams had their moments, but the hosts went close when Luke Wilkinson just failed to get a touch on Matt Saunders’ corner.

For the visitors, substitute Luke Titchiner was unable to divert Brown’s centre goalwards as the game began to peter out.

But two minutes into stoppage time Williams was pulled over by Mawene in the box and referee Brendan Malone pointing to the spot.

And Williams took over the spot kick duties from Spillane and sent Davies the wrong way to secure all three points.

Dagenham & Redbridge: Lewington, Ogogo, Ilesanmi, Wilkinson, Doe, Elito, Howell, Spillane, Saunders, Reed (Woodall 65), Williams.

Subs not used: Seabright, Wakefield, Scott, Maher, Hoyte, Bingham.

Attendance: 1,680 (118 away fans)
