Daggers picked up their first win and points of the new season on Tuesday night at Hartlepool United, and midfielder Luke Howell hopes they can build up some momentum with another victory over Mansfield Town tomorrow.

The 27-year-old put his side in front after five minutes of Tuesday’s 2-0 win over the Pools, and for the former MK Dons man was mightily relieved the Daggers got their season up and running.

“It was really nice to get those three points,” said Howell. “We’d played well at Burton on Saturday but we paid the price for six poor minutes.

“I thought the performance was good again at Hartlepool. We got ourselves in front and it was similar to Burton but thankfully we got the second goal and were able to see the game out.”

Howell was also happy to get off the mark himself in terms of goals, and it was extra special for the midfielder following his sister haven given birth to a baby boy earlier in the day.

“It’s the same with the team, you want to get off the mark as soon as possible,” he added.

“It helps to relax yourself when you take an opportunity in front of goal so early on and hopefully it’s the first of many.

“It was extra special for me after my sister gave birth that morning to a baby boy, and that topped off a great day – hence my rocking cradle celebration.”

And now the Daggers have some points on the board, Howell hopes his side can pick up their first home win of the season over the Stags.

“It’s important to pick your first points up as soon as possible and now we’ve done that so hopefully we can push on,” he said.

“There’s no better way to relax the team by picking up your first points. The longer the wait goes on, the more stressful it can become but we go into Saturday full of confidence.

On the challenge Mansfield will pose tomorrow, Howell added: “Mansfield were a tough side to break down last season. The brought a different type of test to most. They are big and physical and it will definitely be another hard game.

“We want to go on a strong run now and it would now be nice to get up and running at home.”
