After a strong start to the season on their home turf, Dagenham & Redbridge have struggled of late, not winning any of their last five games at Victoria Road going in to tomorrow’s game against Mansfield Town.

And while their hopes of a play-off place remain slim with the gap getting bigger all the time that they fail to win, Burnett is keen for his side to avoid looking down the table.

“The gap is starting to open up a little bit more and we have to be careful we don’t start to look downwards,” said Burnett.

“We know we have got to start winning games and sometimes it’s not about how well you play, it’s just about picking up the win.

“At the moment it is about picking the boys up, everyone is down. It’s all fine when you are winning games, but the true test of character is when you aren’t winning and that’s what we are experiencing at the moment and it’s my job to make sure we can turn it round.”

The Stags come into the game off a 4-1 home loss to Bury on Tuesday night, but before that beat promotion-chasing Fleetwood Town 1-0 last weekend.

And Burnett is keen for his side to sharpen up against Paul Cox’s side having labelled the 3-0 away defeat at Mansfield this season as ‘one of the worst performances of the season’.

“Mansfield is going to be a tough game but I went to watch them last night so hopefully that will give us a few ideas on how to play against them,” said Burnett.

“At their palce we lost convincingly and it could have been more than the three that it was and it was probably one of the worst performances of the season.

“We know how tough it will be and that got a great result against Fleetwood and that’s no mean feat. We are under no illusions the enormity of the task and it will take a big effort from us.”
