John Still believes Danny J Green hadn’t fulfilled his potential at Daggers after releasing the midfielder at the beginning of the week.

Dagenham & Redbridge boss John Still felt Danny J Green hadn’t stepped up to the mark after releasing the midfielder on Monday.

The 22-year-old was in his third season at the club, but had only made 22 appearances for the Daggers in that time.

And when Still believed it was his time to shine, the former Bishop’s Stortford winger failed to take his chance.

“This was DJ’s third year at the club, we hadn’t expected anything in the first, but in the second we expected him to push on,” said the Daggers boss.

“He didn’t do that, but we thought he stood still and in the third we tried to get him to improve in training and gave him some game time but it wasn’t quite the case again.

“With Dominic Green struggling with little niggles we felt it was a chance for him to cement a place in and around the team, but despite being involved we didn’t feel he took his chance.

“We explained that to him and in the end both parties felt it was right to release him from his contract.”

The Victoria Road chief confirmed the departure would release a small amount of money available to him, and if an option became available to strengthen his squad he would look at bringing in a wide player to the club.

“It releases some money, but only a little bit,” added Still. “We would look into strengthening if the right player came along but DJ was under contract so we are talking about a very small amount of money.

“We would look into a wide player maybe but the finances are ever so tight, so we would look into it if someone became available that could make a difference.”
