League Two: Dagenham & Redbridge 0 Chesterfield 1
Wayne Burnett’s first home game in charge of Dagenham & Redbridge ended in defeat as they lost out to Chesterfield 1-0 after skipper Abu Ogogo put into his own net for the third time this season.
After a solid 1-1 draw at Bradford on Wednesday night, Burnett made one change to the side, with Dominic Green in the starting line-up ahead of Medy Elito.
There was an obvious change in style for most of the half as the Daggers tried to play it along the floor but the first real chance saw Luke Wilkinson fire straight and Spireites goalkeeper Tommy Lee.
But Paul Cook’s visitors began to gain a foothold and Armand Gnanduillet saw a shot deflected behind for a corner before they took the lead on 19 minutes.
Jay O’Shea was allowed to cross in from the right and all home skipper Abu Ogogo could do was head it into his own net for the third time this season.
Daggers began to come back into it and though they tried to play the ball around there was little end product until Sam Williams found himself free in the box but headed wide from Saunders’ right wing cross.
And as the half drew to a close Saunders narrowly saw his free-kick curl inches over the bar.
Burnett’s side started the brighter in the second period and their top goalscorer Luke Howell volleyed just over the bar.
But Tommy Lee was forced into a great save on the hour mark when Howell looped the ball back into the box and Williams cushioned the ball down for Ben Strevens, whose acrobatic effort was tipped over.
The Spireites then enjoyed a period of possession and only two last-ditch blocks from Gavin Hoyte and Wilkinson denied Marc Richards and Gnanduillet respectively.
But Daggers were lacking the goal threat in the final quarter of the match and Sam Williams’ header from substitute Medy Elito’s ball into box was an easy save for Lee to make it.
In stoppage time at the end of the match fellow sub Jake Reed forced Lee to tip behind and with almost the last kick of the game, a ball back into box was headed against the bar before referee Trevor Kettle blew for full time and a disppointing first home game for Burnett.
Results left Daggers in 15th spot, six points off Plymouth in the final relegation spot.
