Daggers skipper Ogogo - Pompey performance the worst for some time

Dagenham & Redbridge captain Abu Ogogo was startled at seeing his side put in an abject performance against Portsmouth – and admitted he hadn’t seen it that bad in quite some time.

In front of the second biggest crowd of the season at Victoria Road, the hosts failed to perform and Ogogo feels any faint play-off hopes were extinguished as a result.

“The play-offs aren’t looking likely any more, we needed to win this game and we didn’t do that,” he said

“From start to finish they were the better team in every department and we can’t complain.”

Ogogo’s tireless work-rate was always in evidence throughout, and despite the scoreline, he never gave up. That saw him pick up the man-of-the-match award, but he admitted that’s no consolation given the result.

“It’s difficult when it’s going like that. I play the same if we are winning 5-0 or losing 4-1, but a lot of us didn’t turn up,” said the former Arsenal youngster.

“To be honest it’s embarrassing picking up the award after that and I didn’t want to go in that room, but I tried my best.

“The performance is up there with Mansfield away this season where we lost 3-0. They just wanted it a bit more than us. I haven’t seen us like that for a long time. There is playing poor, but still having a go, but it looked like we didn’t even try today.”

The 24-year-old scored his ninth goal of the season as he pulled it back to 2-1 in a brief rally.

Despite playing poorly, they had the opportunity to level just before the break as Luke Wilkinson headed Medy Elito’s free-kick against the bar, and Brian Saah hit the post with the rebound.

“As bad as we played in the first half, Brian hit the post and Wilko hit the bar and we could have gone in level because we rode our luck,” he added.

“It’s been a little while since I last scored and I’ve set myself a double-figure target at the start of the season, but the goal doesn’t really count for much now.”

Little can be done about the result now though, and the Daggers move on to face bottom side Torquay United on Good Friday.

Along with most, Ogogo is hoping for a reaction against the Gulls as they look to avoid a disappointing end to the campaign.

“There are four games left and we need to bounce back, we don’t want the season to just fizzle out. Hopefully we can win on Friday,” he added.
