Dagenham & Redbridge central midfielder Luke Howell is joint top of Daggers’ goalscoring chart after double against Rotherham on Saturday.

Daggers player Luke Howell could get used to being called a goalscoring midfielder after he netted twice in the 5-0 win over Rotherham on Saturday.

The 25-year-old has netted six league goals this season and three in the last two games, to put himself joint top with striker Dwight Gayle in Daggers’ goalscoring chart.

And with the Victoria Road outfit now firmly settled into the season, the former MK Dons man feels the inexperienced side now have the confidence they lacked in the beginning.

“I like that term, goalscoring midfielder, it is always nice to score and at the moment I am doing alright, and getting in the box quite a few times,” said Howell.

“I felt I could have had three today, I probably missed the easiest chance I had but I can’t complain with two.”

For the majority of the season John Still’s side haven’t struggled to create chances, but instead lacked the cutting edge to convert them into goals.

The one difference on Saturday was that they found the cutting edge and Howell believes the fifth-minute opener scored by Gayle gave them the belief to build on.

“A game earlier on in the season that rings a bell is Plymouth. That ended up 0-0. We just didn’t take our chances on the day,” he revealed.

“But we got off to a great start today, Jake’s worked hard and kept the ball in play and Dwight’s tucked it away. Once you get that goal early on you just build from there and it’s a good way to start the game.”

Daggers endured a tough start to the season, not picking up their first win until late September.

But now they have lost just once in their last 10 league games, with Howell now believing the only way is up for the Daggers.

“We all thought we started the season well but we had some bad results,” added the former Lincoln midfielder.

“We’d lose late goals and get draws when we should’ve won. Once we got our first win, we just kicked on from there and it’s now two wins on the bounce and we are just looking onwards and upwards.”
