Sky Bet League Two: Mansfield Town 3 Dagenham & Redbridge 0
A slow start to the second half cost Daggers dearly as they slipped to a disappointing 3-0 loss at Mansfield Town who chalked up their first home win back in the Football League.
Manager Wayne Burnett made three changes to the starting XI which drew 1-1 against Newport County last week with Luke Wilkinson, Billy Bingham and Zavon Hines replacing Gavin Hoyte, Josh Scott and an injured Rhys Murphy respectively.
It was an encouraging start for the Daggers though with the home fans quickly on the backs of the newly-promoted side.
A move started at the back by Wilkinson on 11 minutes saw Medy Elito’s centre headed wide by Luke Howell.
But other than that there was little action of any note with neither goalkeeper tested until midway through the opening period
Comically Brian Woodall did find the roof of the stand from a 25-yard free-kick and it proved to sum up the Daggers day at the office.
On another quick counter attack, Scott Doe, playing at right back to accommodate Wilkinson, played the ball through to Elito who in turn fed Hines.
The former West Ham youngster managed to get the ball into the box but Mansfield’s Martin Riley was able to clear.
Chris Clements fired wide for the hosts with a drilled effort from 20 yards and it was Mansfield who broke the deadlock after 35 minutes when a deep free-kick from their own half was headed home by Sean Clucas to give the Stags the half time lead.
And it was a sluggish start to the second half which ultimately cost the Daggers.
Matt Rhead, on as a half time substitute looped an effort over within 45 seconds but Mansfield doubled their advantage two minutes later.
A 25-yard effort from Jamie McGuire bounced just before Lewington, and though he was able to get a slight touch on the ball he couldn’t get enough behind it to keep it out.
Femi Ilesanmi gave the Daggers goal a respite when his rampaging run from left back saw him fire against the post from a tight angle.
But that only proved to be a brief one as Palmer glanced a header over the bar following Rhead’s header back across goal.
And the hosts were home and hosed with 72 minutes on the clock when substitute Calvin Andrew squared the ball back for an onrushing Rhead who tapped home from close range.
The Daggers did rally and substitute Affy Obafemi did rattle the bar with quarter of an hour remaining, but by then the game was already gone.
