Dagenham & Redbridge have often won game this season because of their attacking intent, but defender Scott Doe believed it was nice to the see their defensive play come to fruition in the 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon yesterday.

The clean sheet was their sixth of the season and it certainly represented their most well-earned, having spent much of the game on the back foot, particularly after Lawson D’Ath’s early second half dismissal.

And Doe was pleased that all their hard work was worth it in the end.

“The conditions weren’t easy, it was windy and raining but today showed another side to us,” said Doe.

“We had to be ugly and defend from the front with Rhys on his own and I thought we did well

“That’s not normally how we are, we are normally known for our attacking intent but at the end of the day we went down to 10 men and was 1-0 up from quite early on, but I thought we saw it our very well. It felt like it was going on for ages and with the weather that made it tough but we came through and that is the main thing.”

The Daggers had gone into the game on the back of a point at Chesterfield, and the long-serving defender, who has made 206 appearances for the club, believed that point gave Wayne Burnett’s side renewed confidence.

“I now think that result makes the Chesterfield point even better,” said the former Weymouth man.

“We should have got three at Chesterfield but the point was massive, it stopped the losing run. We have been good at home but we lost to Torquay here which was really disappointing. To win 1-0 was pleasing all round.

He added: “It’s not like everyone was low before the Chesterfield game but obviously it does take a toll when you lose three games in a row and you aren’t used to it.

“It’s natural that it’s going to affect you but I said to the lads ‘If we win today, it makes Chesterfield look like a very good point’ and we did so it’s made it even better that point and now we’ll just go on to York and hopefully win there.”
