Dagenham & Redbridge manager Wayne Burnett lamented his side’s poor start to the second half as they lost out 3-0 on the opening day of the League Two season on Saturday.

After a goalless first half, the Daggers fell behind thanks to Kevin Ellison’s sweetly-struck free-kick on 49 minutes, before Padraig Amond’s penalty five minutes later effectively sealed the victory after Scott Doe was harshly adjudged to have pushed over Jack Sampson in the box.

And the Shrimps added gloss to the win when substitute Jack Redshaw tapped in deep into stoppage time.

It was a far than ideal start for the Daggers and boss Burnett was frustrated at a sloppy start to the second period.

“To get beat in the first game the way we did is disappointing,” said Burnett.

“The performance in the first half was okay and then we switched off in the second half.

“We didn’t start correctly in the first 5-10 minutes of the second half and we are two goals down. Once that happens there is no way of coming back down, I don’t care who you are.

“I actually thought we played quite well in the first half without being overly threatening.

“They have got some experienced players and when you go 1-0 up they have sat, countered a little bit and then got the second. That’s game over really.

“The third goal is nothing because we are attacking trying to get a way back into it but fair play to them, they’ve scored three goals and we haven’t.”

With Ellison’s opener, Burnett wasn’t quite sure whether the wall was set up correctly by goalkeeper Liam O’Brien, but admitted you can’t afford to give a man of Ellison’s experience the chance.

“I think we were not set up right,” he added. “I think the wall needed to be over a little bit more. The goalkeeper needed to be over a little bit more as well but we’ll have a look at that.

“You give someone like Ellison the opportunity though and he’ll put it away.

“I think we kept going, the second goal killed us being so soon after the first. But if you give teams goals at whatever level it’s very difficult to come back.”
