Dagenham & Redbridge may have fallen to a disappointing 4-0 loss at Ebbsfleet United yesterday, but boss Wayne Burnett admits he learnt an awful lot about his side and the trialists on show.
Charlie Sheringham’s double, plus one each from Billy Bricknell and former Dagger Alex Osborn saw the Kent Conference South side stroll to victory, with Fleet goalkeeper Preston Edwards untested all afternoon.
Trialist Jamie Cureton did miss a sitter, but there was no hiding from the fact that Burnett’s side were well below par, and he kept them on the pitch for some 20 minutes after the full-time whistle.
And though there were no positives to take from the friendly, the Daggers chief felt he picked up a lot from the trip to Kent.
“I actually learned a hell of a lot today which is good for me,” said Burnett. “We have been well beaten and deservedly so.
“With that result we know what we need to do to go forward. I can accept being beat 4-0 but if we put in a performance like I know we can and should I have no problem with it, but we have to be better than we were. Their goalkeeper didn’t have to do a thing.”
He added: “I don’t want to make excuses because there are none. In all due respect to Ebbsfleet, who I think have thoroughly deserved to win the football match, we shouldn’t be coming here getting beat 4-0 regardless of what type of game it is.
“You should have a little bit more about you and after the first two goals went in we looked like we were never going to get back in it.”
The likes of Luke Howell and Joss Labadie were returning from injury, but the latter limbed off 10 minutes into the second half and the extent of the problem will be assessed tomorrow.
“We planned that they would get 60 minutes because some of the players, the likes of Luke Howell and Joss Labadie haven’t played. So we just felt that we would give some people a good 60 minutes,” he added.
“It’s the first time for some time that we have had a settled midfield three, but I think Joss has taken a slight strain once again so it’s disappointing.”
