Club handed home tie in League Cup

Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett was excited to see his League Two side handed a home tie against Championship new boys Brentford when the first round draw for the Capital One Cup was made yesterday.

The two sides met at the same stage last season, when Farid El Alagui’s last-gasp effort earned the Bees a 3-2 victory at Griffin Park, after Josh Scott and Rhys Murphy had netted for Daggers.

And Burnett is pleased to get the chance of revenge at Victoria Road when the two sides meet on August 11 or 12.

He said: “We’re pleased. At least we’re at home. I don’t think we’ve had a home tie for some time.”

Daggers, who have yet to record a win in the competition since their promotion to the Football League in 2007, looked set to break their duck last season.

But they were punished for a late lapse in concentration as El Alagui secured victory for Uwe Rosler’s side.

German Rosler moved to Wigan a few months later and was replaced at the helm by Mark Warburton, who led the club into the second tier behind League One champions Wolves.

Burnett added: “They scored the winner from a set-piece after we switched off, which was disappointing.

“They’re a Championship team now so it will be a really good test for us.

“They’ve got good players and I think they will strengthen more, so it will be an even sterner test, but hopefully we can give a good account of ourselves.”

Daggers need only look at the history books to boost confidence ahead of the tie, as they enjoyed a 4-1 home win over Brentford in League One in 2011, having won 3-1 when the sides met in League Two in 2009.

Former Dagger Sam Saunders could make a return to Victoria Road for the match, while new Daggers goalkeeper Liam O’Brien may face the side he left earlier in the summer if selected.
