Dagenham & Redbridge striker Dwight Gayle always knew they would start turning performances into points.

Confidence plays a big part in any sport and Dagenham & Redbridge striker Dwight Gayle believes he and his team-mates are now starting to find their feet in League Two.

It may have been a slow start for John Still’s side, and it took until September 29 for them to register their first league win of the season.

But since then they have picked up seven points out of a possible nine, and Gayle believed it was only a matter of time before the Daggers started to grow in confidence.

“There wasn’t ever really a worry about us not picking up the points and the wins,” said Gayle.

“Even when the results were not coming, the performances were still encouraging. We have just kept plugging away and now we have a bit more confidence and that is the difference.

“Confidence in football is key and now I feel the results will continue to go our way.”

Gayle made it three goals for the season at the weekend in the 4-3 win over Bradford at Victoria Road and is now well on his way to the 15-goal target he set himself in his first season in the Football League.

“At the start of the season I set myself a target to score 15 and it is nice to start putting them in the back of the net of late,” he added.

“I am playing regularly as well which is nice and always helps a player when he knows he’ll be playing regularly.

“But we have a lot of good strikers at the club and I have to keep performing at the top of my game to keep my spot. I am beginning to find my feet at this level and it is no tougher than what I expected. There are still areas where I need to improve and I will continue to work hard to improve myself.”

After Tuesday evening’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy second-round defeat at Southend United, the Daggers move on to Chesterfield on Saturday, and Gayle is confident they can extend their unbeaten run in the league to four games.

“We are playing with a lot more confidence now and we are definitely capable of getting something from the game up there,” said Gayle.

“The most important thing is to continue to build the momentum and keep the run going as long as possible, hopefully we can do that on Saturday.”

■ Meanwhile, Dagenham have been drawn at home against Ryman Premier side Concord Rangers in the Essex Senior Cup third round, with the tie set to be played next Wednesday, October 17.

In other news, the Daggers’ academy side will face Crawley Town in the first round of the FA Youth Cup, though no date has been arranged, and striker Tom Davie has joined Ryman One North side Harlow Town on loan.
