League Two preview: Torquay United v Dagenham & Redbridge

Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett wants his side to show the hunger and desire that was missing against Portsmouth last weekend when they face Torquay United in the west country tomorrow.

The Daggers lost out 4-1 at home to Pompey last weekend in a game Burnett described as one of the worst performances in his time at the club.

But after that particular disappointment, Burnett is keen for his squad to get back to the performance levels that put them on the brink of the League Two play-offs until a few weeks ago.

“There are challenges in every game that you play,” said Burnett. “We found that out against Portsmouth who came here and were better in every
department and I think that going to Torquay, they are fighting for their lives and they will believe they can beat us.

“We have to go out there with a real determination, fight, hunger and desire which we have shown all season, but didn’t show against Portsmouth.

“The boys know the performance against Portsmouth wasn’t a good one. We have watched the game back on the DVD and it was quite evident where we needed to improve and do better.

“The players are very disappointed because they know what they are capable of and what they have done this season and the performances they have put in. They are as disappointed as anyone.”

The Easter period is tough on most sides and Burnett’s men are set to play host to promotion contenders Chesterfield on Bank Holiday Monday as they complete two games inside four days.

And while that is a physical challenge, Burnett believes the mental aspect of the game is something which players can struggle with more.

“We have got a squad, but we don’t have an abundance of players to choose from,” he added. “It’s important that these players will have no problems playing two games in four days.

“I keep saying to the players that it’s more of a mental thing. The body is capable of so many things, sometimes the mind doesn’t allow it.”
