Herons lost 52-10 at Southwold last weekend

David Wiggins is hopeful Wanstead can get back to winning ways in London Two North East on Saturday when they play host to Ipswich.

A depleted Herons side suffered a 52-10 defeat at Southwold last weekend, a result which ended a run of three straight wins in the league.

The Roding Lane North club were missing a host of players through injury last weekend, though several of those absentees are expected to be back in contention for selection this Saturday.

And director of rugby Wiggins hopes Wanstead can put the disappointment of last weekend behind them by getting the better of Ipswich this weekend.

“We have to draw a line under last weekend and move on from it,” said Wiggins.

“We have plenty of players coming back from injury, so there should be a nice number of players in contention for selection.

“We will also have had an extra week working with the players who came into the side last weekend, so that should help with them knowing what to do.

“Being at home, we can play a little differently than we did at Southwold, where the pitch was a bit smaller. We’ll dust ourselves down and go again.”

Away to Ipswich last weekend, Wanstead coped well in the first half and were still in the encounter at half-time.

A Matt Ward try and five points from the tee by Liam Ball meant they only trailed 17-10 at the break, before Southwold pulled away in the second half.

Wiggins admits the long injury list made it tough for the Herons last weekend, but is keen not to attribute the defeat solely to that.

“I don’t want to blame the injuries for the defeat because we should be able to cover those injuries,” added the director of rugby.

“The issue was that we didn’t have enough time to work on things with those players who came in.

“The conditions were difficult too and that was something we had to overcome. We were doing okay at half-time, but their fly-half ran the game and we can have no complaints with the final score.”
