The Herons were without a game last weekend having opted out of the RFU Intermediate Cup

Wanstead head coach David Wiggins is looking forward to returning to action in London Two North East on Saturday following a week off.

With plenty of their league rivals playing in the first round of the London section of the RFU Intermediate Cup, the Herons were without a game having opted out of the competition.

It allowed Wanstead to give some of their squad members who had niggling injuries a break from the intensity of playing regularly.

And it also gave Wiggins the chance to work on a few things with his charges in training ahead of hosting Romford in the league this weekend.

“We were in need of the rest and it has allowed us to work harder in training ahead of the Romford game,” said the head coach.

“On Tuesday, we had an aerobic sessions involving rucking and mauling that saw a lot of running.

“The break has also allowed us to get a few players back to fitness too, though there are still a couple of are about two weeks away.”

Between now and Christmas, there are no further breaks for Wanstead, though one of those weekends is taken up by an Essex Cup match at home to Upminster on November 18.

And with a regular run of games to look forward too, Wiggins had laid down a target to his squad.

“I’m looking to be in the top five by Christmas and hopefully we can put a good run together to keep us there,” he added.

The clash with Romford will be Wanstead’s first since they lost for the first time this season when they went down against Rochford earlier this month.

But while his changes might be itching to put that defeat behind them when they return to the field on Saturday, Wiggins was again keen to stress his team were beaten by the better side.

“We were beaten by the better team on the day. Rochford will be hard to beat this season and they are geared up for the next two levels,” he said.

“Their lineup against had nine players who used to play for Southend in the National Leagues, so we have to be realistic.”
