Essex 1B: Ilford Wanderers 5 Kings Cross Steelers 13

Ilford Wanderers were beaten for the first time this season as they lost 13-5 at home to Kings Cross Steelers in Essex 1B.

Steelers were camped in Ilford’s half up until the break, but for all their organisation and endeavour, were only able to come away with a six-point lead.

Unusually, Ilford were unable to score as Steelers were adept at recycling ball and had a collective purpose.

Wanderers, though, can take heart from a fine defensive effort, especially atfer losing two players to yellow cards and a third to a red in the second half.

Steelers were at times unable to make the numbers count and in the second half Ilford started to retain ball.

The hosts eventually scored the first try of the game when Terry Marson crossed after a darting run from Cam Dutch.

However, with Ilford in striking range, but Steelers’ persistence and numerical advantage told in the final minutes as they secured the triumph by scoring a breakaway try.
