Cottons Park club beat Kings Cross Steelers 29-20 last weekend

Campion head coach Pat Hallahan admits he has some selection dilemmas ahead of hosting Ilford Wanderers in London Three Essex on Saturday, but insists he is happy to have them.

Without some of their first-team regulars at Kings Cross Steelers last weekend, the Cottons Park club blooded some new faces.

That included Jake Tuner at scrum-half, who delivered a fine display for Campion as they ran out 29-20 victors.

With many of those absent last weekend set to be back in contention to face Ilford, Hallahan says he has some decisions to make with regards to his squad.

But the Campion head coach says he is happy to have those decisions to make and is relishing the situation.

“There are some selection dilemmas, but they’re positive headaches to have,” said Hallahan.

“We’re working hard to try to get all of our best players on the pitch at the same time, which has led to some players playing out of position.

“There are areas, like the back row, where we have great competition for places and other areas where we don’t have as many players as we would like.

“It’s of huge benefit to the club that we have a second XV now too as that helps increase competition for places in the first team.

“Players who don’t make it into the first-team squad on a Saturday can now play for the seconds and show me I was wrong not to pick them.

“We have one or two players still nursing their way back from injury, but there are definitely some selection headaches and they are ones I’m glad to have.”

Campion will hope the clash with Ilford sees them build on a fine victory at Kings Cross last weekend.

After losing their previous two fixtures in the league, the Cottons Park outfit returned to winning ways with a bonus-point success on the road.

That will have given Campion a timely boost ahead of welcoming Ilford in their next game on Saturday.

And Hallahan hopes the Cottons Park side can collect consecutive wins for the first time this term/

“We’re hoping to build some momentum with another victory against Ilford, especially as we’re at home,” he added.

“They came up last season, so we will fancy our chances.”
