National Two South: Barking 23 Redruth 51
Barking ended the month of September pointless in National Two South after they conceded eight tries in a fifth successive defeat of the season.
This one came at the hands of Redruth at Gale Street on Saturday, though they led 6-3 with 13 minutes on the clock.
Two Oliver Forrest penalties for the hosts and one from the Cornish visitors’ Paul Thirlby saw them hold the advantage. But it was to be short-lived.
A three-man move from Redruth saw Sam Parsons race over the Barking try-line, with Thirlby adding the extras to push them 10-6 ahead.
Lewis Vinnicombe was the next to expose the hosts with a fine run before finding Tom Notman to score under the posts and Thirlby had the simple task of adding the extra two points to put them firmly in control of this encounter.
There was a lot of work in defence for Dean Cutting’s side to get through and though they held up Tom Duncan, a quick release from Nick Simmons found Richard Brown and he was on hand to touchdown their third try in quick succession.
And the visitors made sure of the bonus-point securing fourth try in the 33rd minute via the way of a penalty try after a 5m scrum collapsed under extreme pressure and Thirlby did the rest with the boot to move them 29-6 ahead.
Forrest slotted over another penalty for the hosts, but Chris Fuca was on the back of a catch and drive to move the score onto 34-9 at the interval.
The break did little to alleviate Barking’s woes intially as Duncan ran 25m for an unconverted try.
Charles Baffour-Awuah though did score the first try of the afternoon for the Goresbrook side when he intercepted and ran 40m for a try converted by Forrest.
But the see-saw start to the second half continued as Duncan ran in for the second with three men on his back, and Thirlby converted.
There was little action in the final quarter of the encounter, with a series of replacements before Fuca doubled his try tally for the afternoon.
Once again Barking ended the match with the final score though as some neat play saw Michael Anderson cross the whitewash for a converted try by Forrest.
