Bitter sweet story for Mark

It was a bitter sweet story for Mark Nullmeyers in the county semi-finals as he booked his place in the final of the under-25 singles, but then missed out in his four-wood singles showdown with Steve Mitchinson, before losing in the triples on Sunday morning.

The Wanstead Central bowler was hopeful of repeating his Top Club victory over Romford’s England international Mitchinson, but a disastrous start did not help.

The 25-year-old was hamstrung by the difference in the green he played on that morning.

“It was a different pace from the other green, which didn’t help,” he said. “Early doors I struggled and you can’t do that against Steve. I was chasing the game and taking risky shots and that wasn’t the green to play that on really.”

Mitchinson opened up a 6-0 and then an 8-3 lead, but Nullmeyers fought back to make it 10-9 and get himself back in the game.

“At that point I thought I was in with a chance, but again I am catching up, trying to play the shots to get me in front, when I should have been playing to stay in the game,” he explained.

“But then Steve had a couple of solid ends, which made me chase it and that never helps.”

Mitchinson scored 10 shots without reply to put him on the verge of victory at 20-9, but Nullmeyers still had some fight in him as he hauled himself back to 20-16, killing one end with a firing shot that saw the jack fly across three greens.

“When he got to 20 I felt a bit fed up and there was no pressure on me so I just let the bowls do their thing and had a little rampage,” smiled the Central bowler.

“On the last end, if I had got the jack for three then I would have got within firing distance and then everyone gets a bit nervous and the game changes.”

It was not to be though as he missed with that last wood to go down 21-16.

There was better news in his last year in the under-25s as he booked a final place with a 21-15 win over Mitchell Young of Springhouse.

Trailing 4-0 early on, he levelled at 8-8 and felt he was in control.

“I was probably outbowling him for the whole game, but he kept sneaking past me with one decent bowl,” said Nullmeyers. “I was thinking he is going to fail sooner or later and when he did I got a couple of threes to get back level and that is the difference between Mitchell and Steve, you can get away with it against Mitchell.”

Nullmeyers will now take on Russell Harmour from Courtauld Halstead in the final, but he has already booked his place in the Nationals where he will be looking to win the trophy for the second time.

There was more disappointment the following morning when Nullmeyers teamed up with Andy Coultrup and David Baxter, but went down 20-15 against a Romford team of Chris Coombs, Scot Reading and Nigel Smith.
