Newham & Essex Beagles Lee Merrien will represent Team GB in the men’s marathon at this summer’s Olympics.

Guernsey-born Merrien, 33, competed in three Commonwealth Games as a middle distance runner before making his marathon debut at London in 2010.

After coming home in two hours 16 minutes 48 seconds, Merrien finished eighth in the European Championships in Barcelona.

He finished in 22nd place at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu and was first British runner home in this year’s London marathon in a personal best of 2:13.41.

However, Merrien did not meet the qualifying standard and was initially left out of the GB squad.

His place was confirmed after a U-turn, though, and he will line up alongside south London’s Scott Overall.

He said: “For the selectors to have picked me and given me the opportunity to pull on the GB vest at an Olympics in the biggest honour and privilege that can be bestowed upon me.

“Being a home Olympics will make this all the more special.

“I have run thousands of miles preparing for this over the past 10 years so I will be immensely proud to take to the streets of London and represent my country.”
