Barkingside racer counts cost of fuel problem
Barkingside’s Scott Malvern was left disappointed after running into mechanical problems in the latest Radical SR3 Endurance Championship event at Oulton Park.
A week after recording his 50th career win at Brands Hatch, Malvern and race partner Nick Jones travelled to Cheshire for a 90-minute event and showed good pace in practice.
But they could manage only 10th out of 20 cards in qualifying, to Malvern’s frustrations.
He said: “I have to admit we were puzzled. Track conditions and temperature were pretty much identical both days and the car was handling really well.
“We actually went almost a second quicker on Saturday but many others improved by an even bigger margin so we were halfway down the grid.”
The race got underway just after 3.30pm with ominous rain clouds threatening but Malvern handled the first and longer stint well and made a great start, overtaking three cars on the first lap to move up to seventh.
He pulled off several further spectacular overtaking moves to move up to second place which he held until the 50-minute mark when he handed over to co-driver Jones.
A short shower caused the pace to slow somewhat in the tricky conditions, but the team elected to remain on slick tyres which proved to be a good call as the rain blew over and the circuit dried quickly in the warm conditions.
Jones remained in a credible fourth place until late in the race, but unfortunately a fuel pick-up problem as the level ran really low in the tank caused him to cruise to a halt with just a few minutes remaining.
Despite a disappointing end which didn’t justify the team performance a philosophical Malvern said: “This was new territory for us. We have only done 40-minute races so far. We fitted the biggest fuel tank possible and if we’d had the usual safety car period or the forecasted rain had materialised the consumption rate would have been slower and the level wouldn’t have dropped as much.
“Some teams did opt for a fuel stop, but that added at least another minute to their mandatory pit stop so it’s a trade-off.
“Like several other teams we gambled and lost but on another day it would have been the right thing to do. We are unhappy with the result but not the performance so we will learn from this and move on.”
The series now has a five-week break before returning at Snetterton on July 19-20 and Malvern hopes to take advantage of the break to do some valuable development testing.
