Woodford Green wins Essex County title

It was third time lucky for Woodford Green AC’s men’s team as they lifted the Essex County title at Hadleigh on Saturday.

They went into the event having won silver behind Chelmsford for the last two years and prior to that, the club had won the trophy in 2006 and 2008 after a drought dating back to 1974.

Harold Wyber led the club’s charge and after a lap and a half, four were in the top 15.

He was left to fight it out for the individual bronze medal with Southend’s Tom Frith and Havering’s Rob Warner, only for Frith to kick away and leave Wyber to settle for fourth.

But the team challenge looked strong as Darren Southcott finished in a battling sixth, closely followed by Angus Holford and Kevin Murphy in eighth and 11th respectively.

Forty-five year-old Gareth Cavell finished strongly as Louis Clark began to flag.

Cavell battled home in an excellent 23rd place for the performance of the day, with Clark 13 seconds further back in 26th.

Jim Roche occupied 27th spot and Tony Russell produced a good performance to come home in 31st.

All in all that meant that Woodford closed nine men in the top 31, well before any other club closed six in the field of 193 finishers as they finished ahead of Orion Harriers who took silver and Colchester picked up bronze.

The B team placed fifth overall with Clark the first of the six-man team which beat the A teams of Havering, Ilford, Southend and Thurrock.

CJ Shepherd and Tony Pamphion were 45th and 46th respectively, while Joe Everitt ran well for 61st.

Woodford were the only club to close a C team, which included Martin Mack in 97th, Alistair Holford (100th), Richard Hogg (103rd), Steve Lambert (109th), Chris Maybin (112th) and Paul Stockings (126th).

The Woodford women couldn’t close a team at the event last year, but were able to do so this time round and finished a solid fifth.

V35 Kat Gundersen led the team well and came home in eighth place, followed 25 seconds back by Rachel Lund in 14th – one place betted than last year.

Sarah Nicholas was the next Woodette to cross the line in 27th, while fourth and final scorer was V45 Jenny Thomas.

The fifth place finish stands them in good stead for the Met League meeting this weekend.

Elsewhere, 18-year-old Matt McLaughlin ran a time of three minutes 48.17 seconds in the 1,500m at the BMC Open in Sheffield, which was the fastest indoor time by a Junior in the UK since 1986, and fourth fastest of all time! Alex Cornwell ran 1.49.70.

They were the first two British athletes, second and third behind Spaniard Llorenc Ferre.

Epping resident Tom Beedell won his first county CC title at the Bucks Championships.

Bertie Powell, who ran while feeling ill, was 11th in the Middlesex champs and second claimer Jordan Donnelly was 5th in the Merseyside equivalent.

And another very successful run was by 19-year-old Ed Shepherd to come second in the Herts champs, just 13 seconds down on the winner.
