Ford Sports bowler Glyn Walls’ son rushed to hospital
Saturday’s county pairs semi-final at Westcliff was tinged with drama before it had even begun after Ford Sports bowler Glyn Walls saw his son rushed to hospital the previous evening, forcing him to pull out.
His partner Bill Nelson took up the story.
“I think it was about seven or eight o’clock on Friday night that Glyn’s son was rushed into Basildon Hospital and Glyn was there all night and was going to be there all day Saturday too,” he said.
“He phoned me up at five to seven on Saturday morning, woke me up as I was still in bed and said that his son had got acute appendicitis and they will have to operate.”
Happily, Glyn’s son came through the operation ok and is now back at home, but it meant a phone call to young substitute Charlie Butcher.
“Charlie was going to work, but when he heard what had happened, he said he would come down immediately,” said a relieved Nelson.
Out of adversity came triumph for the Ford pair as Nelson and Butcher put in a fine display to march through 23-10 against youngsters Ryan Mann and Karl Lodge of Silver End.
Nelson was full of praise for Butcher after what he described as a ‘comfortable win’.
“We were in control from about the fifth or sixth end,” said Nelson.
“We kept pulling away and every time they came back, we got away again.
“Charlie had a tremendous game. All I did was get my woods in the head and he just did what he had to do.”
Butcher had to borrow brother Jack’s club shirt as he only joined the club this year and hasn’t got one yet, but it certainly worked a treat.
“I keep saying he ought to be a Middleton Cup player,” said Nelson, who was in his usual consistent form.
“For a kid of his age to bowl like that is so good. You don’t get many of that age who can play like that.”
Walls will hopefully be back for the final when they will take on Ed Morris and partner Brendan Glyde of Essex County BC on their own green.
Nelson travels to Radwinter on Saturday for the Area Final of the National Senior singles.
