Youngsters produce an impressive London Youth Games medal haul
Redbridge landed a host of medals at the London youth Games judo event, thanks largely to the Heart of Oak club.
Oak fielded 14 members of the borough’s team – and 20 judoka in total – and enjoyed plenty of success.
Gold medals for the boys went to Philip Chinwuba, Jacques Massa and Michal Szczepanik (representing Barking & Dagenham).
Misael Cesaldi and Kazys Murkstys took silver, as Ahmed Amir, Morgan James, Malik Harris and Antoine Massa won bronze.
Girls’ team captain Peaches James clinched a gold medal, despite having to fight up a weight group, as Nancy Palumbo and Ursula Szczepanik (representing Barking & Dagenham) both worked hard for their bronze medals.
The other players who contributed were Joshua Abraham, Kamal Abdulahi, Angel and Crystal Anegbeh, Jeremiah Balforth, Darius Boyce-Glenn, Louis Cesaldi and Piers Massa.
■ In the boys’ handball competition, Redbridge lost 3-2 to Wandsworth in their first match, followed by a 1-0 defeat to Bexley, before drawing 0-0 with City of London to finish bottom of their group.
The girls’ squad fared slightly better, winning their first two matches against Lambeth 5-0 and Wandsworth 2-0, before losing to Bexley 1-0 to finish as runners-up in their group.
However, they bowed out of the competition after a 6-2 loss to eventual winners Southwark in quarter-finals.
■ Teams compete in the girls’ Kwik Cricket today (Thursday), with the main finals at Crystal Palace next weekend.
