World Cup: Brazil’s pain is finally over

World Cup third/fourth place play-off: Brazil 0 Holland 3

Many people have raised the issue of third and fourth place play-offs and whether it’s really worth it. Brazil will definitely be wishing there wasn’t such a thing.

They were disappointing from the off once again and Holland didn’t really have to reach top gear in order to come out victorious

It could have been worse than what it turned out to be and they should have been playing 87 minutes with 10 men as Thiago Silva, their most solid defender, brought down Arjen Robben inside the box, according to referee Djamel Haimoud.

Robin Van Persie made no mistake from the spot and then we witnessed even worse from someone who is reportedly worth £50 million.

As many people pointed out on Twitter during the game, David Luiz’s defending was worth more like 50p as he headed the ball back into the path of Daley Blind who had time to take a couple of touches and slot home.

Could history repeat itself? It looked like another heavy defeat could be on the cards.

At least they showed a bit of fight in the second half as Ramires shot wide, and then Oscar was wrongly booked for simulation for a challenge from Blind. There was definitely contact and Blind was forced to be stretchered off as a result so heavy of the challenge.

There was to be no fairytale ending though for the Brazilians as in injury time a Georgio Wijnaldum added the final nail in the Brazil coffin as boos rung round the Brasilia stadium

For Holland this tournament can be considered a massive success – no-one predicted they’d get to this stage and the work of Luis Van Gaal at this tournament bodes well for Manchester United.

But for Brazil these last six days have been their worst for some time and the writing looks on the wall for most of this squad and coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.
