Uruguay and Colombia may have had the hard task of following the second round opener involving hosts Brazil and Chile, and although this match didn’t have the same intensity or drama it more than made up for it in plenty of other areas.

Had James Rodriquez not been a €45 million acquisition for AS Monaco last summer, then we may well have been talking about the next big money transfer to one of the European giants.

And while he is an unknown name to many, he has certainly taking the World Cup by storm.

Rodriquez’ s statistics currently read – four games, five goals, four assists. His performances have been nothing short of top drawer as well.

This second round tie against Uruguay will go down as his game, with the 22-year-old scoring both goals to send his team to the last eight for the first time in their history.

But when people previously thought about Colombia they talked about Radamal Falcao, now it will be James Rodriquez.

They were playing against a Uruguay side minus Luis Suarez, but his imposed absence gave them a cause.

However, minus their star performer they didn’t test goalkeeper David Ospina until they found themselves 2-0 down and it was a struggle for them throughout.

One can only imagine how many Colombia would have put past us if England had qualified!

How they were behind was via two fantastic goals that should be talked about for some time, and yet both were completely different.

Rodriguez had a quick glance towards Fernando Muslera’s goal before receiving the ball outside the area, took one touch with his chest before firing home an outrageous volley off the underside of the bar – surely this will be the goal of the tournament?

And the second was a well-worked team goal as they swept the ball from one side to the other before Pablo Armero’s centre was headed back across at the back post by Juan Cuadrado for Rodriquez to coolly slot home.

Ospina was called upon twice late on from Maxi Pereira and Edinson Cavani, but they easily negated a below-par Uruguay.

Now Brazil stand between Colombia and a place in the semi-finals, and with the way the hosts have played so far you wouldn’t bet against Rodriquez and co pulling off another surprise in this unpredictable World Cup.
