Woodford Town assistant manager Neil Day was left bemused to a controversial penalty which allowed Clapton to force an FA Vase replay at the Old Spotted Dog.

A first-half Temi Babola strike seemed to be steering The Woods through on a bumpy surface before Clapton were awarded a stoppage time penalty.

Woods keeper Alex Reed guessed the right way but the ball appeared to strike the right hand upright rebound back to Tons Steven Sardinhia who had taken the spot kick and duly took two touches before slipping the ball into an unguarded net.

Protests were long and vociferous as to a man Woodford claimed and indirect free kick should have been awarded and the goal disallowed.

Woods manager Dee Safer was dismissed for ‘arguing the point’ but his young side dug in the force a replay after a spirited extra time period.

Nei Day said: “It’s an understatsment to say we’re disappointed with the decision as it cost us much needed prize money and the expense of hosting a replay, there won’t be much left in the prize pot at the end of the draw.

“I will eat humble pie if i’m wrong but our keeper said he got nowhere near the ball so i’m bemused how the goal could stand, it seemed like everyone in the ground including the linesman near the bench and the Clapton management saw what happened but the ref and the pen side lino disagreed- I stand to be corrected when the match video is edited but as we speak we do feel robbed of a deserved victory.”
