West Ham boss looks for youngsters to step up

Hammers manager Sam Allardyce is hoping to incorporate some of the club’s younger players into his squad this season

After last week’s impressive performances by the youngsters for West Ham against Sampdoria, boss Sam Allardyce is hopeful that at least one of them can make the breakthrough and be a regular member of the first team squad this season.

Elliot Lee laid on the winning goal for Reece Burke last Saturday, but there were also useful performances by other youngsters which really impressed the Hammers boss.

“Pre-season has seen a nice blend of Academy players and young pros with our senior pros and they have experienced a lot,” said Allardyce in the build-up to Saturday’s Premier League opener against Tottenham Hotspur at Upton Park.

“One or two came on last week against Sampdoria and proved that they maybe vital members of the squad this year.

“The likes of Danny Potts, Josh Cullen, Elliot Lee and young Reece Burke. They made a big impression, so hopefully one or more than one of those will establish themselves this season, which will be a real bonus.”
