Ryman North: Redbridge 2 Aveley 1
If ever there was ever a game which epitomised a smash and grab than this was one as Leon Smith’s 90th minute strike sealed victory for the Motormen.
Chinedu McKenzie was on target again as the Oakside hosts took an early lead, before Aveley bombarded Redbridge for the remainder of the match.
But while some refereeing decisions didn’t go the visitors way, the Motormen profited from a counter attacking Millers as Smith slotted past goalkeeper James Marrable to spark wild scenes of celebration which involved every single member of the Redbridge team and bench.
The two sides had met eight days earlier in the League Cup, and the Motormen also won that encounter 2-1.
On that day McKenzie struck in the second minute to give Redbridge the lead and he did exactly the same at Oakside.
A long through ball caught the Aveley defence off guard and he slotted past an onrushing Marrable.
It was the perfect start for the hosts, but all that did was rally the visitors.
Junior Baker saw a header cleared off the line and then Junior Ogezi-Uzokwe rounded goalkeeper Jack Avery, but Tyron Thomas got back to deny the Millers striker a shot on goal.
Ogezi-Uzokwe was then hauled down just outside the box but the Motormen avoided any punishment
Aveley continued to dominate and the pace of Matty Bakare caused the hosts problems. He raced onto a long ball from Spencer Harrison and Avery saved his effort.
But he could only parry that out to Petrit Elbi who saw his shot blocked by the stubborn Redbridge backline.
It had somehow remained 1-0 to the hosts at the break, but the Millers got the breakthrough on 51 minutes when Baker’s drilled shot was saved by Avery, however he spilt the ball and Ogezi-Uzokwe was on hand to tap in.
You thought the Millers would go on from there to win comfortably but the Motormen had other ideas and the visitors couldn’t find a way through.
Ogezi-Uzokwe was then hauled down again in an almost carbon copy of the first half incident by Tyron Thomas and this time the Redbridge man picked up a caution, though the away bench were calling for further punishment.
Chances continued to come and go for the Millers as substitute Danny Francis saw a shot deflected behind for a corner and then Lee Weemes headed wide from the resulting corner.
You could almost sense Redbridge would nick it and while the visitors pushed for the winner, they were hit by a sucker punch.
McKenzie paced his way down the right and pulled the ball back for the onrushing Smith who curled a shot into the bottom corner before an old-fashioned bundle ensued as Redbridge celebrated their fourth win on the spin.
