Joint Redbridge managers reflect on Essex Senior Cup exit at the hands of Hornchurch last night.

Redbridge joint bosses Dave Ross and Ricky Eaton admitted the second half penalty killed the game as a contest last night as they bowed out of Essex Senior Cup at the quarter-final stage against AFC Hornchurch.

The Motormen went on to lose the game 3-0 after goals from Junior Luke, Martin Tuohy and Nnamdi Nwachuku, and are now left to focus on making sure they avoid relegation from Ryman North this season.

The first half looked like remaining goalless until Luke netted on the stroke of half time, and any hopes of a turnaround went with Tuohy’s penalty after Nwachuku was felled in the box seven minutes into the second period.

Ross and Eaton felt the decision was harsh, and was effectively the game clincher for the Urchins.

“I think in the first half we gave a very good account of ourselves,” said Ross.

“Up to half time I thought it was 50/50. We were well in the game and I thought we were playing some lovely football. We were certainly stopping them from playing.

“It would have been nice to go in the dressing room at half time 0-0. We told the boys they had an excellent first half and to go out there and do as well in the second half but we walked out there and the ref has given them a penalty almost straight away and I think our heads went down a little bit after that.

“In the second half the penalty killed it. I didn’t think it was a penalty personally. It was a very harsh decision and when that went in that was the final nail in the coffin.”

Ross was also pleased with the performance put in by Bostry Bansende at right midfield, saying: “Bostry was excellent on the right of midfield for us. He had a great game and was causing them plenty of problems.”
