Barkingside boss Matt Frew was pleased his gamble paid off as Side registered their first Ryman One North points of the season with a 1-0 win over Maldon & Tiptree last night.

Frew was in two minds whether to start midfielder Richard Oxby in their first game at new home Cricklefield, but was glad he did in the end as Oxby netted the only goal of the game as they bounced back from Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Thamesmead Town.

“I only made the one change from Saturday and that person went and got the goal,” said Frew.

“Richard hasn’t had a pre-season but he came on at Thamesmead and he played alongside Matt Gulfer.

“I knew it was a gamble to start him but he played alongside Matt Gulfer in the middle of midfield and fortunately the gamble paid off.”

Frew was pleased to pick up a clean sheet in their workmanlike win against a Maldon side expected to go well this season.

Side had to wait until October 19 last term for their first shut-out of last season, and the Cricklefield boss was happy to get the first points on the board.

“It’s always nice to get those first three points early on in the season,” he added.

“To be honest it wasn’t the prettiest of performances but it was workmanlike. We dug deep and we were on the back foot against a strong Maldon side that is expected to do well this season.

“The work rate and commitment was second to none from the boys and quite a few people at the game thought we deserved the win.”
