David Mooney’s double ensured he became the first Orient player in 16 years to hit 20 goals in a season.

The next target for the Irishman - 20 league goals as he looks to fire the O’s into the Championship.

The 29-year-old broke a six week goal drought as early as the fourth minute, sliding home John Lundstram’s brilliant through ball and brought the 20 up barely half an hour later.

Carl Griffiths was the last player to hit that particular milestone in the 1997/98 season and Mooney said it was a “fantastic achievement.”

“I’m delighted with 20 goals,” he said. “I felt something about today. Even my wife, who’s gone back to Ireland, said she fancied me to get two today.

“I got them early and I was desperate for the hat-trick. I was frustrated to be taken off but we’ve got two games in quick succession so I understand the decision.

“It’s been a while since an Orient player scored 20 goals in a season so it’s fantastic for me personally.”

Confidence is the key for the O’s as the season reaches its denouement.

It had been sorely lacking as they endured their worst run of the season but it seems to have returned at just the right time.

Mooney acknowledged how important that could be, irrespective of whether they can catch Brentford or have to make do with the play-offs.

“We needed a performance like that because confidence is massive,” the striker said.

“Everyone goes through a spell where they struggle, it just happens that ours has come late. But we’re getting over it and the belief is back.

“If you were at training you would have seen the tempo has gone up another level and that showed in the way we started.

“If we win the next seven games we know we’ll be promoted. That’s what we’ll aim to do.

“There are 12 points to play for and we just have to play the same way against Crawley.”

Reflecting on why Orient have struggled of late, Orient’s top scorer thinks their small squad might have hampered them in a hectic season.

And Mooney’s goals were his first since March 1, although the Irishman was never worried about his form returning.

“I’ve had a few injuries and I’ve been on painkillers and injections almost 24/7,” he said.

“I should have probably sat out the Bradford game and I needed that break against Sheffield United.

“You’ve just got to work hard and take the chances when they come. The harder you work the luckier you get.”
