Fabio Liverani began life as Leyton Orient boss with a 2-1 home loss to Peterborough United, and they slipped into the relegation zone in the process.

Former Orient youth product Aaron McLean gave the Posh a ninth minute lead, before Shaun Batt scored his first goal since November 2013 to send them in level at the break.

But Erhun Oztumer’s free-kick two minutes into the second half saw the O’s slip to their sixth home league loss of the season.

Liverani made three changes from the side which lost 1-0 at Gillingham last weekend in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy with skipper Nathan Clarke returning in place of Elliot Omozusi, while injured duo David Mooney and Gianvito Plasmati were replaced by Shaun Batt and Dean Cox respectively.

And it was a bright start for the hosts as a fine Jobi McAnuff run down the left resulted in Dean Cox’s effort being cleared off the line by Kgosi Ntlhe.

But all that was undone on nine minutes when Posh netted against the run of play when a pinpoint ball in from Joe Newell found an unmarked McLean who volleyed home from eight yards.

Orient went through a little quiet spell as Posh begun to get on top, however Scott Cuthbert failed to get anything on a free-kick into the box.

A turn and shot from Batt was comfortably held by former O’s goalkeeper Ben Alnwick, before Ntlhe tried his luck from 30 yards, only to see the effort creep wide of the target.

But the O’s got a deserved leveller on 39 minutes when a ball in from the left from Dean Cox found its way into the path of Batt who took one touch before firing low left footed past Alnwick. Despite the O’s personnel limitations they were playing reasonably well, but Legzdins fumbled a Ntlhe cross only for O’s youth product Harry Beautyman somehow failed to find the net from two yards out.

That’s how it remained at the break but the O’s got off to a slow start in the second half when they conceded a needless free-kick on the edge of the box and Otzumer curled it superbly into the top corner with Legzdins rooted to the spot.

Newell saw another effort deflected wide, but chances began to peter out, despite the hosts having plenty of the ball in the latter stages.

Otzumer tried his luck with another free-kick, this time from a little further out, but this time the set piece came to nothing and sailed high over the bar.

Orient’s frustration began to reach boiling point with a number of off-the-ball incidents, but the closest they came to a late equaliser was when Josh Wright’s 25-yard shot was saved by the feet Alnwick.

Joe Newell received his marching orders for a second bookable offence late on, and though the O’s tried to force the ball home in a late goalmouth scramble, they slipped to defeat.
