Milanese frustrated as Leyton Orient pay price for set-piece woes at Gillingham again

O’s boss pleased to have at least created chances despite Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area semi-final defeat.

Leyton Orient boss Mauro Milanese believed the O’s were made to rue play in both boxes as they slipped out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area semi-final at Gillingham yesterday.

John Egan’s 79th minute header from Michael Doughty’s corner proved to be their undoing in the end as they missed out on a potential Wembley return at the expense of their League One rivals.

Set pieces had proved their undoing in the league encounter at Priestfield three weeks ago, and despite Milanese feeling they put plenty of work in on the training ground to address the issue, he was disappointed to lose out from another similar situation.

“We are very disappointed because we believed we could progress,” said Milanese.

“We pushed them a lot and we created a lot of chances.

“We worked a lot on set pieces this week because we thought that Gillingham are particularly dangerous in this area. We had conceded from three set pieces in the league to Gillingham and it was another corner that killed us in this match.

“We need to do something. I asked for the lads to mark tighter but at the end of the day we lost the game because of the set piece and it is starting to happen too often now.”

Up the other end, the O’s certainly created opportunities, with Bradley Pritchard spurning their two best chances in the second period.

And the Italian was particularly frustrated that it isn’t falling for them in the final third at the moment, though was at least happy they were creating chances.

“There is a way to win and a way to lose,” he added. “I think the good points were that we didn’t lose because we played worse than them, didn’t create chances or gave up. We just lost because we didn’t finish well.

“We did everything okay for 95 yards and in the last five yards something happened.”
