Leyton Orient defender Lowry: We must stick together

Leyton Orient defender Shane Lowry insists now is the time for everyone to stick together as they look to start moving up the League One table.

Boss Russell Slade survived Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Notts County despite it being a ‘must-win’ following owner Francesco Becchetti’s ultimatum, after the disappointment of last weekend’s 2-0 home defeat to Colchester United.

And the 25-year-old insists now they have to string some good results together, starting tomorrow at Scunthorpe United, to get themselves moving in the right direction.

“There’s definitely more of an expectation this season with the takeover and the influx of players, but it’s always hard after the heartbreak of last season the club had, but I think we are more than capable of pushing on,” said Lowry.

“All it takes is a couple of back-to-back wins and the confidence will start breeding throughout the squad.

“We’ve got a lot of good players here and we need to stick together especially at these times.

“We are not in a good position but we have a lot of quality in the squad and we are all in this together and want to get promotion.

“We haven’t started the best, but the competition for places is good for the team and it gives the gaffer a good headache to choose from.”

It’s been a tough start to the season for the O’s, with plenty of miles racked on their travels to date, while only having three home games.

The former Aston Villa youngster admits the schedule has been tough, but it has enabled him and some of the fellow new players that time to acclimatise with the rest of the squad.

“At the start of the season our schedule was ridiculous the amount of away games we had and the amount of travelling,” he added.

“People don’t realise what it takes out of you but the be all and end all is we need to get points on the board.

“It was good for team bonding and though we were dealt a harsh schedule, that’s football.

“A lot of the lads here have got plenty of games under their belt so we have plenty of experience, we just need to concentrate on getting three points now we’ve been drawing a lot of games but we need to start picking up wins.”

Lowry was a summer arrival at Brisbane Road following his release from Championship outfit Millwall.

And though he came into pre-season training later than the bulk of the O’s squad, he now feels he’s getting somewhere near his best.

“When I first came in I missed half of pre-season and I am one of these that need to train every single day to get up to speed and match fitness,” said Lowry.

“I’ve been used in a couple of positions. I personally feel my best position is centre half, but I just love playing football and I always said I needed a few games to get going.

“I feel I am starting to reach the potential and hopefully I can keep my spot in the team and kick on.”

The O’s have been in good form on the road, and remain undefeated going into tomorrow’s trip to Scunthorpe United.

That is pleasing for Lowry, but he knows they’ve got to start reproducing those good at Brisbane Road, with the side yet to win in front of the home faithful.

“Our away form has been pretty decent and as the away team you are under no pressure really,” he added.

“But we know we have to get more points on the board, score more goals and keep more clean sheets and we have to start producing at home as well.”
