Interim O’s manager Nugent hails depleted squad after Doncaster win

Leyton Orient interim manager Kevin Nugent hailed his threadbare squad as they maintained their unbeaten run away from home with a 2-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers.

Goals from Jay Simpson and Darius Henderson secured Nugent’s first win as O’s boss, and they moved up to 15th in the League One table after the victory.

They are not doing it the easy way though as their woes increased with the absence of midfielder Romain Vincelot, after he picked up a knee injury against MK Dons, and fellow midfielder Jack Price also hobbled off last night.

“It was an exciting game and it was a good away performance from us and we are obviously pleased with the three points,” said Nugent.

“There were some really big performances from our players and I am certainly not going to be singling out anyone because it was a group effort and I am really pleased with the two finishes.

“It was a depleted squad but we said before and there were some 16-17-yard-olds on the bench as well so the lads knew they had to go out and get a result and gradually we are getting there with this team.

“Romain had a whack on his knee in the game against MK Dons. He went down a couple of times in that game with the injury but we’ll have to see how he is. Hopefully he’ll be available for Saturday.

“When Jack came in I knew what he was capable of in terms of keeing the game ticking over and he has good defensive instincts as well so it’s disappointing but we will assess him and see how he is.”

Simpson and Henderson have netted nine goals between them so far, and Nugent feels they are starting to prove a few of their critics wrong.

“They are beginning to show their qualities now,” he added. “It takes new signings some time to find their feet and I was really pleased with Darius and his goal,” he added.

“He has been a handful for a few games and being a centre forward myself sometimes you get a bit of stick but I was so pleased for him to get that.”
