Fabio Liverani’s assistant reflects on last night’s 2-2 draw at Deepdale.

Leyton Orient assistant manager Marcello Donatelli hopes the point gained at Preston North End last night can give the squad confidence to take into the rest of the season.

David Mooney gave the O’s a fifth-minute lead before Jermaine Beckford levelled it up with a free header after 23 minutes.

Paul Gallagher smashed home a second half penalty after Scott Cuthbert brought down Kyel Reid, however, Orient secured a point thanks to Chris Dagnall’s curling effort 12 minutes from time.

And Donatelli, who took the post-match interview with boss Fabio Liverani suffering with a fever, was pleased with the character the O’s showed against a side in the League One play-off places.

‘We have done very well to get a point against a side that are technically gifted and very physical,” said Donatelli.

“We have played a good defensive game because Preston is a strong side and we have 20 points less than them.

“I think the point is very important for us and shows the character of the side. I think this point give us confidence.”

Donatelli was disappointed though with the manner in which the O’s conceded Beckford’s equaliser, after the striker was given too much space in the box to glance a header past Gary Woods

“The mood in the dressing room is positive because we have gained a good point at Preston,” he added.

“We didn’t mark Beckford and he was free to score. It was a gift for Preston.”

The Italian also had praise for the 134 Orient fans which travelled to Deepdale for the game.

“They are fantastic because of the journey they have had. It’s cold as well. We thank them very much for their support considering the long trip,” remarked Donatelli.

The point moved the O’s up a place to 19th ahead of the remaining League One fixtures later today.
