Ilford boss Fenn eager to build on a good week

Foxes chief eager for strong end to Essex Senior League season.

Ilford boss Allan Fenn is keen for his side to build on a ‘good week’ when they take on FC Romania in the Essex Senior League on Saturday.

After a frustrating time of it recently due to a lack of matches, the Foxes have turned things round with a last-gasp 2-1 win over Greenhouse last Wednesday, before putting basement boys Sporting Bengal to the sword with a 5-1 away victory on Saturday.

And Fenn admits those two results have given everyone at the club a much-needed boost.

“It had been tough of late for myself and everyone at the club with the lack of games and a few defeats when we did play,” said Fenn.

“But scoring that late winner at Greenhouse gave everyone a massive shot of confidence going into the Bengal game.

“We changed our style of play for that game, but it didn’t quite work in the first half.

“We changed it again at the break and it was much better and we could have scored a few more.

“It’s our biggest win of the season and we played with some real purpose. Bengal are struggling in the table, but they did offer some resistance. However we were good enough to overcome that.”

Ilford now face an FC Romania side who enjoyed a great start to the season and had a good FA Cup run to boot.

But they haven’t fared so well of late, with a number of players

leaving the club, which has resulted in three home defeats by a combined score of 13-1.

Despite all that, you will not get Fenn taking them lightly at Theobalds Lane this weekend.

“I’ve heard they have lost a few players to clubs higher up in non-league, but we won’t be taking them lightly and will be fully focused on how to stop them,” he added.

“When we played them earlier in the season they were by far the best footballing side we had played.”

Following that, the eighth-placed Foxes face a run of three games against teams below them.

And though wary, Fenn is hoping for a late season push up the table.

He added: “You cannot afford to be complacent in this league, but with a good spell we can really move up the table and finish the season on a high.”
