Hornchurch boss Jimmy McFarlane was pleased with his side’s performance for the most part as they progressed to the semi-final of the Essex Senior Cup with a 3-0 win at Redbridge last night.

Junior Luke, Martin Tuohy and Nnamdi Nwachuku were all on target in the win, and the Urchins set up a last-four match with reigning Cup winners Concord Ranngers, which will be played on February 24 at Bridge Avenue.

And McFarlane, despite missing a number of players, was by and large happy with his side’s showing, with goalkeeper Sam Mott having a quiet night in the Urchins goal.

“I was well pleased and I am over the moon,” said McFarlane.

“The win was the most important thing because it’s a cup I rate highly. I said to the boys beforehand ‘because I am shifting it round a little, don’t mean I am taking it lightly’.

“Apart from a couple of corners, Sam Mott hasn’t had a save to make all night and eventually we ended up comfortable winners.

“We had a little sloppy spell in the first half, but we are through to the semi-finals and that’s great.

“We’ve got Concord next and you have to beat some good sides along the way if you want to win it.”

McFarlane couldn’t fault a single player in the victory, but reserved special praise for midfielder Joey May.

“Nnamdi Nwachuku came in and done alright, but for me Joey May was the best player on the park,” he added.

“He was passing well and his set pieces were always dangerous. No-one had a bad game, but he was the standout performer for me. Martin Tuohy worked tirelessly and he’s showing he’s nearly back to full fitness.”
