Eaia Embalo’s brace helped Sporting Bengal United come from a goal down to defeat local rivals Barkingside 2-1 in the Essex Senior League last night and equal their best ever points tally in the division.

It looked like Side would take a big step towards safety when they took a first-half lead, but Michael Walther’s men couldn’t build on it and are still in trouble.

Bengal began the brighter of the two teams and nearly went in front on two occasions before Barkingside opened the scoring.

Roddy Lemba dribbled into the area and although he appeared to lose the ball, he was able to get a shot off and fire home inside 15 minutes.

Imrul Gazi’s team nearly conceded another soon after, but Ataaib Khan denied Lemba on this occasion and then the Mile End Stadium club ramped up the pressure.

Embalo and Ashaan Siddik created numerous opportunities, however it remained 1-0 at half time.

Bengal continued to push for an equaliser and former Barkingside attacker Steve Carvell went close, but it took until midway through the second half for the visitors to eventually level.

A quick break and mistake at the back from Side handed Embalo the chance to lob home goalkeeper Mikel Breckenridge and he duly delivered.

Both teams were desperate for the three points now and Barkingside were left to rue a missed opportunity when Khan spilled a cross, but they couldn’t force the ball home and it came back to haunt them.

Breckenridge saved a free kick from Bengal captain Freddy Tandon, but Embalo was on hand to tap home the rebound and secure an important win for the visitors.

Gazi’s men have now equalled their best-ever points total in the Essex Senior League and they still have two games left.

Bengal remain 13th in the table on 46 points, while Barkingside are 16th with 38 and only four points ahead of the bottom four.

Next up for the Mile End Stadium outfit is a tough encounter at home to promotion-chasers Redbridge.

Meanwhile, Side will seek a response when they face landlords Ilford at Cricklefield Stadium on Saturday.
