The 22-year-old missed training on Thursday, but revealed he is desperate to get playing again as soon as possible

Dele Alli remains a doubt for England’s second game in Group G against Panama after suffering a thigh strain on Monday night.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder got through 80 minutes of the 2-1 win over Tunisia after suffering the injury early in the first half.

It was a surprise to see the youngster continue for so long, especially with the thigh issue appearing to hamper him, and may prove costly in the short-term at least.

Speaking to Press Association Sport after the game, Alli said: “Hopefully I am okay. It’s my quad.”

Meanwhile boss Gareth Southgate explained how they will monitor the Spurs playmaker ahead of Sunday’s match with Panama (1pm kick-off).

The Three Lions manager confirmed Alli picked up the injury during the first half and kept the ex-MK Dons ace because he felt he could continue.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek eventually replaced him with 80 on the clock and played a part in England’s late winner by winning the corner from which Harry Kane scored from.

Southgate said: “We had to keep monitoring Dele against Tunisia. He was feeling a little bit of an issue just before half-time.

“He felt he could carry on and I thought the runs that he was making and the way he was pressing the ball was still causing a problem.

“Before the injury he had a half chance with a lovely ball Jordan Henderson played to him, lofted over the top, but we have good options on the bench.

“We felt to put the freshness of Marcus (Rashford) and Ruben on would bring fresh energy, but also a different sort of threat to the one that we’d posed.”

On Wednesday night, Alli revealed his disappointment on Twitter, but insisted he will be pushing hard to be fit in time to continue playing his part in England’s World Cup campaign.

He added: “Frustrated to have picked up a slight injury on Monday. I will do everything in my power to get back to full fitness as soon as possible.”

Sunday may prove to be too soon for the Tottenham midfielder, but he will hope to come back for the clash with Belgium on Thursday (June 28).
